Supporting Fibromyalgia with Reflexology

As per NHS UK, Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by persistent pain throughout the body. Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, it is thought to be linked to abnormal levels of specific brain chemicals and the processing of pain signals by the central nervous system.

Fibromyalgia predominantly affects women, but the condition can also occur in men and children.

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

·        Fatigue and trouble getting to sleep as well as staying asleep.

·        Increased sensitivity to pain.

·        Stiffness of muscles.

·        Fibro-fog; which can include trouble remembering things and concentrating.

·        Headaches.

·        Digestive issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

·        Low mood and anxiety.

·        Painful menstrual periods.

How fibromyalgia is treated

While there is no cure for fibromyalgia at present, there are treatments available to alleviate some symptoms and improve quality of life.

Treatment usually involves a combination of:

- Lifestyle adjustments, including exercise programs and relaxation methods

- Talking therapies

- Reflexology

Exercise offers numerous benefits for individuals with fibromyalgia, such as pain reduction. It can also fortify muscles and enhance blood flow and circulation. Recommended low-impact aerobic activities include swimming, walking, cycling, as well as yoga and tai chi.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapeutic approach that seeks to restore balance to the body, both physically and emotionally. It offers several advantages for individuals with Fibromyalgia, such as:

·        A reduction in pain levels

·        Improved circulation; better circulation aids healing and improves energy levels as there is an increase in oxygen and nutrients being delivered around the body.

·        Promotion of relaxation, which can help to reduce stress levels and anxiety. Reflexes worked include the amygdala reflex in the big toe (a set of neurons found in the mid brain, which controls emotions. The Solar plexus is also balanced; this reflex is known as the nerve switchboard; representing the body’s core energy and emotional grounding point.

·        Detoxification; lymphatic drainage techniques support and improve the body’s ability to eliminate waste from the body. Stimulation of the lymphatic system can also help boost the immune system.

·        Improved quality of sleep; working the endocrine system can help regulate sleep. The pituitary regulates the circadian rhythm which is the sleep wake cycle. The thyroid regulates metabolism and the adrenals help support the nervous system and regulate blood sugar levels.

·        Boost energy; stimulating the pancreas (to improve absorption of nutrients and vitamins) and; the adrenal gland to boost energy (adrenaline) which can be suppressed by Fibromyalgia.

·        Inducing deep relaxation via the Hip-sciatic reflex. This show also support better sleep and reduce irritability during the day.

It is recommended to have weekly reflexology sessions for six weeks, followed by monthly maintenance sessions for best results.
